$4,500 - TM OK-N, Fully built, dyno tuned and tested. Includes carb, pipe, and engine mount
The new OK-N category is the most exciting thing to happen in American karting in years. The engine is an international FIA class, and represents a move away from spec engine racing and towards a true racing class. This is the direction US karting should be headed; fast, light, powerful engines on sticky tires, not underpowered 100cc air-cooled engines on hard tires. The engine is a direct drive, water cooled 125cc engine that is “open” to building and modification. What this means is engine builders can actually build and tune the engines rather than assemble spec parts, hoping to make a fast spec engine. What this means for the consumer is, if you choose the right builder, you can always get a winning engine. You no longer need to buy multiple engines hoping to get a special one. Every engine can be machined, ported, and tuned to be fast. The price is slightly higher than most TaG engines, but overall cost is much lower because every engine can be built into a winner. Also, the format allows you to use engines from different manufacturers, another move in the right direction. The current state of US karting is that of a monopoly; the 2 dominant entities import the engines, parts, tires, and oil, and mandate their use in the race series they promote. Monopolies never work in the favor of anyone but the monopolist, so giving racers more choice in equipment is a huge positive.
The engine in Senior format makes 35+ hp, and being direct drive (no clutch, no slip) makes for a challenging, visceral racing experience. The engines are beautifully built, and have very stout bottom ends. Main bearings will last a full season (30+ hrs), cranks should get new big end bearings at 15 hrs. Top ends should be done every 6-8 hrs for top performance, similar to any TaG engine.
For 2024, the Junior class of OK-N will be introduced in the US. A simple, restricted exhaust header is all that is needed to change the OK-N to Junior format. It will be ~28hp, and at Junior weight, will be an amazing class to challenge our younger drivers.
